Non-antibiotic
alternatives to preventing
urinary tract infections

The new Pharmacy First scheme in England will enable community pharmacists to supply prescription-only medicines, including antibiotics, for 7 common conditions, including uncomplicated urinary tract infections (UTIs) in women.1

UTIs are the second most commonly-reported indication for an antibiotic prescription in the community, accounting for almost 1 in 4 antibiotic prescriptions where the anatomical site is specified.2

However, antibiotics come with the risk of antimicrobial resistance and non-antibiotic alternatives may sometimes be more appropriate to help manage uncomplicated cases and prevent recurrence.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • Refresh your knowledge on the diagnosis and management of uncomplicated recurrent UTIs (rUTIs)
  • Understand the importance of antimicrobial stewardship in the context of rUTIs to help reduce the risk of resistance
  • Gain an overview of alternatives to antibiotic treatment for uncomplicated rUTIs
